Use Of Effective And Efficient Communication - 1011 Words

Clinical Question In the clinical health care setting, health care professionals such as nurses, use effective communication tools such as handoffs and bedside reporting. Handoffs has been the main known communication method used to transfer critical information that leads to a continuity of care and safety for the patient. Bedside reporting allows the oncoming nurse to physically see the patient, allowing questions to be asked and participation. Effective and efficient communication has been the main focus of many research studies that observe, analyze and evaluate the methods like bedside reporting and handoffs. The main question is: Does one method improve patient care and safety over the other? Significance of Problem As the health care field has evolved over the years, ineffective handoffs may pose a potential risk in patient care and safety which may include wrong-placement surgery, medication errors or patient death (Friesen, White Byers, 2008). It has been done traditionally at the nurse’s station and research has displayed that uneventful episodes or accidents were more likely to occur during the shift report (Ofori-Atta, 2015).
